Productions Hen and Chicken celebrates 18 years of Pub Theatre
In October 1989 Show of Strength (SOS) opened it’s first season at the Hen and Chicken, North Street, creating pub theatre in Bedminster.
In early autumn 2007 the pub opened under new management (black sheep bars ltd who also run the Alma Tavern) and in October 2007 SOS celebrated its 18th ‘pub theatre’ birthday by performing An Audience with Sarah Guppy by Sheila Hannon, the one woman show with Kim Hicks who also performed in that very first season!
Hicks—in period costume but aptly aided by 21st-century interactive whiteboard—gave a sublime delivery of a beautifully-crafted script, a tale of which no Bristolian should be ignorant.
The Evening Post
We also produced The Naked Truth with John Christopher Wood to rave reviews.
John Christopher Wood performed The Naked Truth
His(Wood’s) material is often faintly irreverent, but handled tenderly, and his handling of the minutiae of life is insightful….(the audience)was in hysterics
The Evening Post
Venue Magazine gave SOS 5 stars for ‘the season’ and wrote;
you could argue, perhaps, that neither show was ‘proper’ theatre but then that’s what we need Show of Strength for: to break a few rules.
HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY SHOW OF STRENGTH
An Audience with Sarah Guppy is an excellent educational resource for schools. It is an entertaining and thought-provoking piece suitable for virtually any space/meeting place. The plays wide range of themes (science, design, history, the role of women, drama) would attract a variety of societies/clubs or interest groups.
